What is Asbestos
|
Asbestos is the generic name for 6 different naturally-occurring fibrous minerals. The types of asbestos include:
|
All forms of asbestos are resistant to heat, fire, chemical, and biological break-down. Asbestos does not dissolve in water or evaporate. These properties mean that asbestos fibres do not burn, do not undergo significant reactions with most chemicals, and do not break down significantly in the environment. With these properties, asbestos was useful in a wide range of manufactured products such as building materials, friction products, and heat-resistant fabrics. It is estimated that asbestos was added to 3000 different construction products.

SMALL RENOVATIONS PROJECTS:
WHS offers asbestos testing services for renovations of single rooms like a bathroom or a kitchen to determine if any asbestos is present. Our team is AHERA trained and experienced in conducting asbestos testing, and we can test a variety of materials commonly found in single-room renovations to determine if they contain asbestos.
Typical samples we take include the ceiling texture, flooring materials, and a minimum of three (3) drywall samples. Our team will collect the samples in a safe and controlled manner, following industry best practices to ensure that there is no risk of asbestos exposure during the testing process.
Once we have collected the samples, we will analyze them in our laboratory to determine if any asbestos is present. If asbestos is found, we will work with you to develop a plan for safe removal and disposal of the affected materials.
Overall, our testing services provide our clients with peace of mind during single-room renovations, ensuring that they are not exposing themselves or their families to the risks associated with asbestos exposure.
Once we get the results we will prepare a report detailing the following:
- description of the materials sampled
- identify what type of asbestos is present along with its concentration
- if asbestos is present we will provide you abatement options to ensure your project proceeds safely
- estimated cost for abatement

LARGE RENOVATION PROJECTS
Asbestos testing services for larger renovations, such as basement or kitchen/living room remodels, are offered by WHS to identify the presence of asbestos in materials affected by the renovation scope. The testing requirements will depend on the square footage of the renovation and the observable materials.
Our team will conduct a thorough visual inspection of the materials that will be impacted by the renovation and identify any materials that may contain asbestos. Based on the size of the renovation and the observable materials, we will determine the minimum testing requirements to ensure that we are able to accurately assess the presence of asbestos.
Once we have collected the necessary samples, we will analyze them in our laboratory to determine if any asbestos is present. If asbestos is found, we will work with you to develop a plan for safe removal and disposal of the affected materials. We can also identify asbestos containing vermiculite / zonolite from the WR Grace Mine in Libby Montana.

DEMOLITION PROJECTS
WHS offers asbestos survey services prior to demolition projects to ensure that all asbestos-containing materials are identified and properly managed during the demolition process. WHS has successfully worked on large scale demolition projects throughout Alberta and BC.
Our team will conduct a thorough survey of the building, including all accessible areas and materials, to identify any asbestos-containing materials. We use specialized equipment and techniques to collect samples of suspect materials and analyze them in our laboratory to determine if they contain asbestos.
Once all asbestos-containing materials have been properly identified and managed, we can provide a certificate of completion indicating that all asbestos-containing materials have been removed in compliance with applicable regulations. This certificate of completion can be used to obtain a demolition permit.
Our team has extensive experience in conducting asbestos surveys and managing the safe removal and disposal of asbestos-containing materials. We follow industry best practices and regulations to ensure that all work is performed safely and efficiently.
