ASBESTOS WORKER TRAINING FAQ's

1. Who can take the asbestos worker exam challenge?
Workers with recent asbestos training from outside Alberta  may qualify. Documentation of equivalent training within the past three years is required.  Attached is WHS Exam Challenge Policy - asbestos_worker_exam_challenge_process.pdf
2. What if I don’t pass the exam challenge?
If you score below 80%, the full two-day course is required to obtain certification.
3. How often do I need to recertify?
Asbestos Worker Cards expire every three years. Recertification requires passing a new exam with at least 80%.
4. Can I retake the recertification exam if I fail?
Yes, but if you do not pass on the second attempt, you must retake the two-day course.
5. How do I get a replacement for a lost asbestos worker card?
Contact WHS today. You will need photo ID and to sign a replacement form. The new card will include the original issue date.
6. Can I use my Alberta asbestos ABATEMENT certification in other provinces?
Each province has unique asbestos training requirements, so while Alberta asbestos certification is essential for local compliance, other jurisdictions may require additional credentials.  For workers with current Alberta Asbestos Worker Certification, WorkSafeBC does have a reciprocal agreement that allows Alberta trained workers perform Level 1 and Level 2 asbestos abatement work.  WorkSafeBC Reciprocal Agreement
7. What if my Alberta asbestos course certification has expired?
Sorry You’ll need to retake the full asbestos course to renew an expired certification.
8. Can I transfer my Calgary asbestos training to another provider?
While your initial training is documented with the issuing agency, recertification of your asbestos abatement card can typically be completed through any approved Alberta asbestos course provider including WHS, as long as the certification is still valid.

9. What qualifications exempt me from recertification for asbestos Worker certification?
Professionals with designations like CIH, ROH, or instructors who have taught the Alberta asbestos Worker Certification course at least twice in three years may qualify for a recertification exemption.
10. Do I have to call and book an appointment to challgenge the Asbestos Worker Certification Exam?
Yes, please call WHS to book your appointment to challenge the Asbestos Worker Certification exam. Please bring photo identification and your original asbestos worker certification card.
